Purpose-  We live in an area that is very religiously diverse.  Every major religion and most minor ones are represented in our here. The purpose of this project is to provide the opportunity for a small group of students to interact with the religious landscape, beliefs, practices, arts and points of view  as they investigate a local religious organization, person, practice or house of worship, or any approved religious/spiritual topic in the D.C. Metro area.

This can involve any of a wide variety of sources involved or ancillary to any religious or spiritual purpose or belief. The main part of the project will be a field trip to visit and investigate the topic.

Process-  Students will form groups of three, four, or five.  Each group will brainstorm a list of possible topics.  As much as possible this list should reflect students’ own interests and curiosity.  Each group must have their final choice approved. Such topics might include, but are not limited to, architecture, rites, rituals, beliefs, holy days, ethical practices and arts (dance, music, painting, etc).  This should be accomplished by site visits, interviews, research, photographs, etc.

In addition to established religions you may be able to investigate a  variety of lesser known spiritual groups or organizations.  There are a number of New Age practicitioners, Wiccans, meditation groups and others in this area.  No matter what your group settles on it must be a religious/spiritual topic or organization that your group is not familiar with.

Field Trip Presentation- Each group will prepare an informative, interesting, multimedia presentation that will share the experiences of the group with the rest of the class.  Where appropriate there should be pictures, music, discussion/lecture, skits, diagrams, etc.  The class should be able to share as much of your experience as accurately as you can communicate it.  15-20 minutes for each presentation.  A schedule will be set up for groups to sign up for the week they wish to present.  Everyone should get a real sense of your experience

Safety- Exercise the same caution that you would in dealing with any person or persons who you do not know.  Make sure your parents and Mr. Lamb know and approve of your plans and stop if you feel uncomfortable or concerned at any time.  Use common sense and good judgement.

Evaluation- Based on how closely your group follows the letter and spirit of the assignment, the quality and and educational/entertainment value of your presentation, equal participation by all group members. 30 points

Schedule-  Pick a week in April, May or June.  You will present on one of the block days.
Pick the week your group wants, first come first serve.

Don't try this at home!
