For each of the following make sure to include citations of appropriate court cases or amendments (at least one per question) to the Constitution in your answers.  For each question briefly give your opinion on the correctness of our current understanding. Know the key terms and key cases.

Part 1- 5 points
1. What is the meaning of “equal protection of the laws”?  How does this relate to the concept of suspect classifications in the law? 

2. How has our understanding of equality changed from before the Civil War to the present? 

Part 2- 5points
3. Describe how views on equality in voting have changed and developed over the years. What policies have brought about the most significant changes?

4. Describe how women’s rights have developed over the years.  What are some of the major changes that have helped bring this about? 

Part 3- 5 points
5. Write a short paragraph describing the reasons favoring some form of affirmative action to be used in society.  Then write a short paragraph describing reasons against affirmative action.  What is the current court opinion on affirmative action?
