Please note the Admissions portion of the web site is undergoing some changes in organization of information. TJHSST is a unique Fairfax County public high school that provides an innovative, specialized learning environment for highly motivated students who have a genuine interest in the biological, physical, mathematical, technological, and computer sciences. The majority of students enter TJHSST in their freshman (9th grade) year, during the winter round of freshman admissions which, for the Class of 2014, will begin in October 2009. A second summer round of admissions for the Class of 2014 is available in June 2010 only for students who move to a participating school division after September 30, 2009. A limited number of students are admitted to the sophomore (10th grade) and junior (11th grade) classes each year as well. That process will take place in June 2010. TJHSST does not admit students to its senior (12th grade) class. The TJHSST Admissions Office oversees and administers the admissions process. If you have admissions questions, please contact us at the Admissions Office. Do not call TJHSST. NewsUnderstanding Final Admissions Decision For information on the how final admissions decisions were made, please see Understanding the Decision Process. TJHSST ADMISSIONS OFFICE HAS MOVED The TJ Admissions Office has moved. Our new address is: Thomas Jefferson Admissions Office The new telephone number will be: 571-423-3770. FAX will be 571-423-3777. It is imperative that all correspondence directed to our office is sent to our post office box. DO NOT MAIL materials to us at Devonshire Administrative Center. The mailing address for the Admissions Office is: TJHSST Admissions Office FRESHMAN ADMISSIONS - CLASS OF 2014 (WINTER ROUND) 480 students will be offered admission to the Class of 2014. An additional fifty (50) students will be placed in a wait pool for possible admission in July 2010 after the completion of the summer round of freshman admissions. All semifinalists will receive a letter from the admissions office informing them whether or not they have been offered admission to the TJHSST Class of 2014. A wait pool letter will be sent to all semifinalists who are in the wait pool. A test score report also will be included in the mailings. Final admissions decisions will be mailed to all current semifinalists on April 30, 2010. They will not be mailed any earlier this year. Please do not call the Admissions Office to ask if the letters have been mailed. Please be aware that we cannot, and do not, provide early notification of final admissions decisions. Please be aware that it can take anywhere from a day to ten days for mail to reach students in the Northern Virginia area we serve. If you are concerned about mail delivery, please check with your local post office. If you have not received your notification letter by the end of the day on Monday, May 10, 2010, the parent or legal guardian listed on your application form (NOT the student/applicant) may call the admissions office on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 571-423-3770 (NEW NUMBER as of 05/10/10). Please do not call before May 10, 2010. If you must leave a voice mail message, please provide the following information: (a) you name; (b) student’s name; (c) student’s I.D. number; (d) school student attends; and (e) telephone number where you can be reached during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Please be aware that we cannot return long distance calls. The parent/legal guardian also may e-mail the Admissions Director (Tanisha.Holland@fcps.edu) beginning on May 11, 2010. DO NOT send your e-mail before May 10, 2010. Please provide the following information: (a) you name; (b) student’s name; (c) student’s I.D. number; (d) school student attends; and (e) telephone number where you can be reached during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST). Please be aware that we cannot return long distance calls. Information regarding final admissions decisions cannot be provided via e-mail. SOPHOMORE AND JUNIOR APPLICATIONS ARE NOW AVAILABLE Applications for the sophomore (10th grade) and junior (11th grade) classes at TJHSST are now available. If you are a sophomore applicant and you attend a public high school in a TJHSST participating school division: Application packets are available from the TJ liaison counselor at your high school beginning on or about April 5, 2010. Please pick one up from the counselor. If your school has applications, you must pick one up from your school. If you are a sophomore applicant and you do not attend a public high school in a TJHSST participating school division, but you currently reside in a TJHSST participating school division: Application packets are available from the Admissions Office. Please e-mail the admissions specialist, Mr. Simms-Smith at Amos.SimmsSmith@fcps.edu, to request an application. Please provide the following information: (a) name of student; (b) current grade and school attending; (c) math course currently taking; (d) mailing address; and (e) name of parent/legal guardian and telephone number where that person can be reached Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. If you are a sophomore applicant and you do not currently live in a TJHSST participating school division: Please have your parent(s) contact the admissions director, Ms. Holland, at 571-423-3770 to discuss eligibility. If you do not currently live in a TJHSST participating school division, your parent/guardian must speak with the admissions director before you can receive an application. If you are a junior applicant: You must submit (by no later than May 1, 2010) a copy of your high school transcript and PSAT or SAT scores to the admissions director for evaluation of eligibility before you can receive an application. Please be aware that, by instruction of the local school division, no sophomore or junior applications will be accepted from students who reside in Fauquier County. NOTE: Part II of the sophomore/junior application must be completed online. The three pages of Part II are available on the Resources page of this website. Teacher recommendation forms will be sent with the application packet but also may be found on the Resources page. Please make sure that you copy the form and the instructions if you are giving those online forms to teachers. THE TEACHER RECOMMENDATION FORM FOR SOPHOMORE/JUNIOR APPLICANTS IS NOT THE SAME FORM THAT IS USED FOR APPLICANTS TO THE FRESHMAN (CLASS OF 2014) CLASS. MAKE SURE YOU PRINT THE CORRECT FORMS. SUMMER ROUND APPLICATION PACKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE Summer round applications for the 2010-2011 freshman class (9th grade) are now available. Summer round is available only to students who moved to a participating school division after September 30, 2009. If you lived in a participating school division before that date, you must have applied to TJHSST by October 23, 2009. If you are a summer round applicant and you currently reside in a TJHSST participating school division and you attend a public or private middle school in a TJHSST participating school division: Application packets are available from the Admissions Office. IF YOU ARE A TEACHER WRITING A RECOMMENDATIONYour teacher recommendation form can be filled out electronically on this website. See Resources for more information. Please note that you still must print the completed form and sign it before you submit the form. Guidelines for Writing Teacher Recommendations are available from the TJ liaison counselor at your school. If your school does not have a liaison counselor, please e-mail the admissions director (Tanisha.Holland@fcps.edu) from your school e-mail account to request a copy of the guidelines. UNDERSTANDING THE SEMIFINALIST POOL DETERMINATIONFor information regarding how the pool of semifinalists is determined see Understanding the Decision Process. TEST PREPARATION FOR THE TJ ADMISSIONS EXAMINATIONThe admissions examination for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology begins with a two hour standardized test, the TJ Admissions Test. For students who wish to learn more about the test, there is a test preparation handbook for the TJ Admissions Test, the Student Handbook for the Admissions Test for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, which was prepared by the testing company that produces the admissions test. The Student Handbook for the Admissions Test 2009 is available for you to read online and print. The TJ Admissions Office does not (a) recommend, or (b) not recommend, test preparation classes. We do not collect information or data regarding the efficacy of such classes.
