Welcome to the TJHSST Sysadmins website! Here you'll find notices of maintenance, downtime, and other news along with information about what we do, where to find us and how to become a Sysadmin. To find out more about the Sysadmins and how to join us, click here.

Admin Apps Now Available!

If you would like to participate in the sysadmin program next year, you must fill out an application. Current junior admins should fill out the "Senior" application, and everyone else should fill out the "Junior" application. Be prepared to put a reasonable amount of effort into these applications. Turn in your application to one of the senior admins by 8th period on Wednesday, May 18.

Welcome to TJ

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology TJHSST Student Systems Administrators Dear incoming freshmen and students new to TJ, Welcome! Congratulations on your acceptance and decision to come join the TJHSST community for the next stage of your education. The Student Systems Administrators are glad that you are here, and hope that you dive right in and discover what TJ is all about. To help you with the process, we would like to tell you about some of the services that the TJ Information Technology infrastructure supports. Intranet - As you have no doubt already discovered or been told about, the TJHSST Intranet is one of the primary services that the TJ Systems Lab (Syslab) offers. The Intranet is where you will be signing up for your 8th period activities, and hosts your student directory which can list a students’ schedule, email, address, 8th period schedule, and Instant Messaging screen names. Email - All students are automatically given a school E-mail account which can be accessed at https://webmail.tjhsst.edu/. All users are given a 7.5GB mail quota, and have access to email and an address book. Students may configure a desktop client (Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.) to send/receive email by following these directions. Remote Access – The Computer Systems Lab (Syslab) allows remote access from outside the Jefferson network. Students can download PuTTY or any remote access program to connect through Secure SHell (SSH) to the remote access server (remote.tjhsst.edu) on port 22 with their school username and password. Students can also use WinSCP to transfer files between home and school. Mac and *NIX users can utilize the built-in `ssh` command (ssh remote.tjhsst.edu) to access the TJ servers as well. All users are given a 1GB quota for their “home directory”, but this can be raised on request. Server: remote.tjhsst.edu Connection Type: SSH Port: 22 All users are able to access the Sysadmin website at http://www.tjhsst.edu/admin/ to check the current status of the Syslab’s servers and web services. You can also find links to other services that are offered to students, such as the software repository mirror and Sun Secure Global Desktop. Students may also use the Service Request Form to apply for a website, database, and other requests. As always, please feel free to contact the Sysadmins at: sysadmins (at) lists.tjhsst.edu if you have any questions!   Have a great year and a wonderful time at TJ! Sysadmin Application

The Sysadmin Application for the 2010-2011 school year is now available. It is available in pdf form and as a LaTeX document. If you want to fill it out electronically, the LaTeX version will be more useful.

It is due on May 21, 2010. You should deliver it to Dan Johnson by email or in person. Bonus points for hand-delivering it so I get a chance to meet you.

The application deadline has been extended to May 28, 2010. So if you didn't manage to apply on time, please consider completing one.

TJ CSL Status

As a result of the power outage on Saturday, 4/3/10, it seems that the air conditioning unit in the Machine Room is partially or completely out of service at this time. We will know more once we have physical access to the unit tomorrow, but some services may experience downtime as we deal with the increased temperatures of our servers. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at sysadmins (at) lists.tjhsst.edu. Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE: The CSL air conditioner has been fixed, and services are returning to normal.

CSL System Update

Our continued apologies for any systems that might still be impacted by the air conditioning outage. The Syslab air conditioner has still not been fixed to our knowledge, and there is no ETA as to when it will be done.

CSL System Update

We have received word from the County that they have had to order replacement parts for the air conditioning unit, and it will hopefully be fixed on either Tuesday or Wednesday. At the moment, we currently have all services functioning at reduced capacity. Thank you in advance for your continued patience. --The Sysadmins.

CSL System Status

Due to a failure of the CSL Machine Room AC Unit, we are currently consolidating production services onto fewer machines in an attempt to maintain an operational environment for the servers. As a result, some systems may be running a little slower. At this point, we are making every effort to keep all production services online but it remains to be seen how long it will take for this problem to be resolved. As a result of the higher temperatures, we are also having some intermittent stability issues. We are sorry in advance for any disruptions and thank you for your patience. We will continue to provide status updates as we get more information.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at sysadmins (at) tjhsst.edu. Thanks

Intranet2 goes 1.0

The Intranet development team is pleased to announce that we have now reached version 1.0. The last time we updated was in September, and since then we've fixed over 20 bugs and added several new features, such as eighth period favorites and email updates for announcements. We also made several user-interface tweaks in filecenter and eighth signup, so be sure to check those out.

Massive downtime on CSL services today

Sometime today all CSL services will be going down for network maintenance. Webmail, Intranet, the main website, remote SSH access, Sun SGD, and club websites will ALL experience outages. Please plan ahead. Thank you.
