Welcome to the Sysadmin Understudy website!

2008 graduating sysadmins

What is Sysadmin Understudy?

Sysadmin understudy is an eighth period activity where anyone can come and learn about everything the Student Systems Administrators do. This includes maintaining the Sun Microsystems thin client system throughout the school and in the APCS Lab (Room 231), maintaining the workstations in Lab 115 (the syslab), managing the school's website, Intranet, and a myriad of other things. You'll learn a ton about topics you didn't even know existed just by coming to sysadmin understudy. Currently it's every Wednesday B-block. If you would like to become a student system administrator, there's no better way than coming to the understudy class. Learn a little about each area of running a computer system, then pick a topic you enjoy and specialize in it. The entire class is student-run, just like the rest of sysadmins. Skills you learn in understudy are valuable for college and careers. Emphasis is on fun, and it is assumed that you have never used the Linux operating system before.

News and Updates

Sysadmin application
There is a new sysadmin application here. It is due on May 21. Hand it to Peter Godofsky (myself) or Dan Johnson.

Website backend complete!
Thanks to Dylan Ladwig, this website now has an administrative interface, which means it will be easier for me to update, which means updates will be more frequent. It isn't actually in python, it's in PHP, and since I had to move the old newsposts over to the database, their timestamps are all wrong. But from now on you can expect more frequent updates to this site.

Emails have been uploaded
I added the emails that were sent out to the Understudy list to the website, for all of you that may have missed them or were added to the list late. You can find them here.

Connect to TJ using PuTTY
Here's a copy of the email I sent out to the list that explains how to use PuTTY to connect to TJ. I'll upload a real handout as soon as I have a chance to write one.

New Website
Welcome to the new Understudy website! Until we get a real website going, this will be the website where you will find the handouts and such for the understudy program. Eventually I'll make a python backend or something, but for now it's just static XHTML.

Useful Information

To keep in touch about announcements for the Understudy activity, sign your email up for the mailing list, found here.

If you have any questions, just email me (Peter Godofsky). My email address can be found on Intranet.

The website of the former lab director of the CSL, Mr. Hyatt, is still up and has tons of useful information about Linux/UNIX. It's a little outdated, but his list of commands is very helpful. You can find it here.

There are also some useful HTML tutorials: TJ CompSci tutorial | Mr. Hyatt's tutorial
