Student Services FAQs

Summer Reading:

Q: I heard there are summer reading assignments in some classes that have to be completed before I return to school in September. Where can I get information on which classes have one and what they are?

A: All TJ students have at least one reading requirement – our One Book, This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women, edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman. Other assignments are listed on our website and available at: http://www.tjhsst.edu/curriculum/summer/summerassign2012.php. Freshman English assignments are listed under “IBET Summer Readings.”

Fall Sports:

Q: I’m totally interested in playing a Fall sport. Where can I get information on this?

A: Information about which sports are offered, tryouts, physicals and more is available at: http://www.colonialathletics.org/ Check the site for updates throughout the summer too.

Counselor Assignments for the Class of 2016:

Q: How do I know who my counselor is?

A: Stay tuned!! Counselors are randomly assigned and will be announced at the Orientation.

Freshman Orientation:

Q: What day is Freshman Orientation? Is it mandatory that we attend?

A: Freshman Orientation is planned for Thursday, August 30th. While it is not mandatory, we hope that all available incoming freshmen and their parents can attend. It’s your first opportunity to meet your teachers, counselor, classmates and BigSib. You can walk your schedule, get used to the building and hear from current students about life at TJ. Parents, there are things for you too! We hope you can all make it!

 Schedule Changes:

Q: I want to change some of my classes for next year’s schedule. How do I make that happen?

A: Prayer??  Just kidding!

If a student or parent would like to request a change to their course requests they will need to wait until late August when the Counseling staff return from their summer breaks and after the Master Schedule has been developed. We have already begun the planning and decision making to build the schedule for the coming year based on the requests received by the published deadline.

If you intend on registering for an 8th academic course to be taken during the 2012-2013 school year, we respectfully ask that you complete an additional copy of the registration form (available at: http://www.fcps.edu/is/onlinecampus/documents/Registraton2012_2013.pdf) and submit one to the school as well. Please be aware that there are only a limited number of courses available to students to be taken as an 8th course. Please consult your student’s School Counselor or the TJHSST Online Course Guide (http://www.tjhsst.edu/curriculum/dss/courses/index.php) and refer to the Online tab for more details.
