Summer ReadingAs you make plans to acquire books listed below, please consider assisting the PTSA's dedicated efforts to support TJ's many programs by purchasing books through the PTSA's Amazon.com program. Various TJHSST courses, including upper level courses, require summer reading and assignments that must be completed prior to classes beginning in September. The information below is provided as a guide, but may not be comprehensive. Please contact your instructor with any questions. TJHSST School-Wide Summer ReadingTJHSST is entering its ninth year of the One Book program, in which the entire school community reads the same book during the summer. One Book for One QuestionThe One Book selection for 2011 summer reading is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This nonfiction story will help launch our discussion of the 2011-2012 one question, "How can we, the TJ community, take action to prepare students to confront difficult moral and ethical decisions, both now and in the future?" All students and faculty will read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks during the summer, and will have the opportunity to react to it through class discussions and activities when the school year begins. Since this reading involves some topics for mature readers, a home study guide has been created for parents and is available here. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is easily available through public libraries, bookstores and online purchasing. Help support TJ by purchasing this book through the PTSA's Amazon.com program. Foreign Language Summer Assignments. Please refer to individual language pages for summer reading assignments. Geosystems Summer ReadingAll rising seniors are required to read State of Fear by Michael Crichton. State of Fear has many references. One assignment next school year will be to examine those references as to their validity and relevance. There is no need to examine the references over the summer, but students do need to know the story, the arguments made, and the characters. Capturing your doubts and confirmations at the superficial level, for now, will be most helpful. Humanities Summer ReadingThe links below provide detailed information for many of the Humanities courses offered. If information can not be found, or there are questions, please contact Dr. Castaldo, Humanities Division Manager.
* Course numbers are provided to clarify which courses are teamed and which are not. Please be sure you select the summer reading for the course that you are registered for; use the course numbers to verify your course. |
