Junior Christine Mayuga was named one of the 2013 Washington, D.C. Girls of Merit by Girls World Expo. The D.C. Girls World Expo event was hosted by the Washington Examiner on Jan. 5 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Mayuga was recognized for her work with the Special Olympics and Best Buddies, among other leadership and service activities.
The TJ Rubik’s Cube Club attended the Carnegie Mellon Fall 2012 tournament on Dec. 8 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa. Team members included senior Chris Mercado, sophomore Alex Wendt and freshmen Devin Kim, Eli Lefland, Rushi Shah, Shirley Wang and David Zhao. Lefland, Mercado and Wendt qualified for finals in their respective events, and Lefland placed third overall.
Fairfax County Times staff writer Nathan Eilerson named freshman Nathan Chuwait and sophomore Julie Luo as part of the Times’ favorite high school sports stories in 2012.
