Seniors Jack Brown, Patrick O’Connor, Charlotte Sheridan and Ceci Vollbrecht each received a $1,000 Colonial Athletic Booster Scholarship.
Senior Gordon Hart and Jisu Park and sophomore Hanna Carolina Hatanpaa are honorable mention winners in the 2013 DuPont Challenge Essay contest.
Senior Patrick O’Connor was named the Allstate Foundation-VHSL Achievement Award Group AAA Male Athlete of the Year.
Senior Emily Barrett won two Scholastic Art National Silver Medals for her work in digital art and photography.
TJ Orchestra performed at the Fiesta-val National Music Competition from April 24 to 28. The orchestra came home with Superior ratings, a First Place award, the Most Outstanding Section award and were overall Grand Champions. Seniors Hans He, Andrew Jiang, Ian McConnell and Alan Wei were Outstanding Soloists and senior Iman Abdikarim and sophomore Billie Males were Outstanding Dedication and Musical Contribution award recipients.
The Jefferson overall folder submission to the VHSL Creative Writing Championship won in the AAA division. Juniors Emma Hastings and Anwar Omeish and sophomore Pooja Chandrashekar took first place in their individual categories.
Seniors Dhruv Bansal, Laura Brouckman, Amy Chen, Sarah Eltinge, Amani Farooque, Suhas Gondi, Lauren Huang, Katherine Lee, Yash Maniar, Seung Young Park, Jennifer Peng, Kalki Seksaria, Cody Silverman, Nalini Singh and Robert Wharton each won a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship.
Jefferson’s Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) Team placed second overall at the TARC national finals at Great Meadow Park in The Plains, Va. on May 11.
Juniors Emma Hastings and Anwar Omeish earned certificates for superior writing from the National Council of Teachers of English in the 2013 Achievement Awards in Writing.
Freshman Valentina Lohr received the $5,000 Henry W. MacKenzie Jr. Environmental Scholarship from the Virginia Environmental Endowment at the Virginia Junior Academy of Sciences.
Jefferson computer science teams competed at the American Computer Science League All-Star Competition in Raleigh, NC on May 25. The Intermediate ‘Puter Team of juniors Ryan Jian, Abraham Yongkoo Kang, Doo Won Kang and Victoria Xia placed fourth in the Senior-5 Division.
The Frosh ‘Puter Team of freshmen Annie Abraham, Samuel Hsiang, Rajat Khanna, Samuel Kim and Animesh Tripathy took first in the Junior-5 Division.
