After their first loss of the season against Madison last Tuesday, the boys’ soccer team was able to come back with a nail-biting 1-0 win against Fairfax last night.
The game began well for the Colonials when, surrounded by a melee of players from both sides, junior Nick Johnson slipped the ball past the Fairfax goalie early in the first half. Jefferson dominated for the rest of the half, but play was more even through the end of the game, with Fairfax taking control at the end, but unable to score on senior keeper Alex Park.
“We always joke about having this ‘TJ magic’,” soccer coach Sean Burke said. “I can’t really explain that goal, but sometimes there is something greater going on than the physical effort we put in.”
The boys’ record is now4-1-6, putting them in a good position to look at the district title.
“The Fairfax game definitely wasn’t our best soccer,” senior defender Michael Serron said. “But we got the job done and got the win. If we keep this up, we can take the district.”
The next two games will be essential to the team’s bid for Districts. They will begin by taking on Langley at home on Thursday for their senior night.
“Langley is good, but they’re beatable,” Serron said.
