Herndon-Reston FISH   Herndon     14 & up   Assist in thrift shop (Bargain Loft) - pricing, stocking, cashiering and other duties. Persons interested in volunteering can call (703) 437-0600 or (703) 391-0105. Volunteers can donate one hour or more a month or even work seasonally during the winter holidays or summer holidays.  
Operation Understanding DC   DC     16 & up   You must be an African-American or Jewish student in your junior year to apply. This is a year-long program running from January of junior year to January of senior year for African-American or Jewish students. Some of the activities include speaking in public forums; leading diversity workshops; appearing on radio and TV shows; traveling to different areas of the state to gain an understanding of their cultures.  
Spark the Wave   Various     14 & up   Jobs include fundraising, bookkkeeping, marketing, and working for the program itself. W AVE WEEK is an intensive 6-day program of leadership development, community service, team building activities, and summer fun! We offer both overnight and day camp options for potential participants. All teens who have completed 7th grade through 11th grade are welcome at Wave Week. Wave Week is held on the campus of Villanova University in Villanova, PA.  
Arlington Diocese Refugee Services   Arlington   Admin and Operational   14 & up   Volunteer opportunities include office assistant, tutor, mentor, teaching (e.g., computer, art classes), translation, interpretation, refugee companion, and donation sorting. Office Assistant positions are at any of 4 office locations: Arlington (Main Office), Alexandria, Falls Church, Chantilly, and Fredericksburg.  
Bedside Books   Various   Admin and Operational     Collect and distribute books for needy members of the community. The organization will assist with helping you identify recipients. A modest program can probably be managed by devoting 1 to 2 hrs per week over the course of a month or two. See website for more info. Deadline to apply is May 15, 2012.  
Capital Area Food Bank   DC   Admin and Operational   14 & up   Sorting and packing food donations for our agencies. Training may be required for Ambassador Volunteer program, a regular commitment involving representing the Food Bank within the community.  
Center for Ethical Solutions   Various   Admin and Operational   16 & up   The Center for Ethical Solutions has a few openings each semester and during the summer for a select group of interns to work on groundbreaking bioethics projects. Interns hold non-paid, 20-hour a week, work-from-home positions that provide flexibility and an opportunity to work on a great variety of projects. Commensurate with education and training, interns can help author “Legal Trends in Bioethics” or “Medical Ethics in the News,” do background research for scholarly projects, or help with administrative duties. Children's National Medical Center   DC   Admin and Operational   15 & up   Provide arts and crafts or play activities in hospital waiting areas; plan and implement a special event or performance for patients; provide front line customer service support, assist staff at the Welcome Desk and answer phones in the Volunteer Service office; accept, sort, and distribute donations; assist Emergency Department and Child Health Center in office duties, triage, and patient discharge; and assist non-clinical departments with administrative duties.

Fairfax County Office of Elections   Fairfax   Admin and Operational   16 & up   Please contact Ms. Methfessel by email. There is interesting work on the Special Election date June 12, 2012, from evening 5:30 p.m. till 10 p.m. Studentss will be involved in compiling information from all the Precincts. Will be an excellent experience for seniors in the US Government class. More opportunities will open up for the Primaries and General elections of 2012. Please contact Ms. Methfessel beginning September 4th, 2012 to volunteer for those elections.

Greenspring   Springfield   Admin and Operational   14 & up   Many volunteering opportunities to support a wide variety of on- and off-campus activities that enhance the quality of life for Greenspring residents and the community at large. Examples include: Channel 6 TV; Coupon Clippers; Dogs of Greenspring Pet Therapy; ESL; Knit, Crochet & Chat; Light & Sound Group; The Book Club; The Sandwich Project; Tutoring for Elementary School Students; Arts& Crafts; Bingo; Clerical Support; Playing Music; Reading; Walking with a Resident; and Wheelchair Escorting.  
Kids Science Quest   McLean   Admin and Operational     This program is currently on hold, pending funding.  
National Center for Missing & Exploited Children   Alexandria   Admin and Operational     Most internships are intended for college undergraduates or graduate students, but IT Assistant internships are occasionally available in Info Technology Dept. for students with at least two years of technical experience. Must work minimum of 15 hours per week between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Mon. through Fri. Duties include provide pc rebuilds, update/maintain support desk process & procedure documentation, hardware & software installation and troubleshooting, system & area organization, maintain software inventory, perform hard drive data removal. Some administrative office work is available as well.  
National Institute of Health - Children's Inn   Maryland   Admin and Operational   14 & up   Individuals or groups of teens are encouraged to help out with special projects such as Thoughtful Treasures (where teens can make small items to put in each patient's mailbox) or collect food for the family "Help Yourself" food pantry. Other opportunities include organizing a special activity in the evening for families (ice cream social, pizza night, craft, etc.), performing a special talent for the familes, preparing or serving food for Sunday Suppers, decorating the Inn for holidays and hosting holiday events. Teens 18 or older are eligible for long term volunteer program.  
Smithisonian Institution: National Science Resources Center   DC   Admin and Operational   16 & up   The Center for Strategic Planning and Reform Intiatives of the NSRC works to transform science education by building partnerships with community stakeholders assisting regions, districts, and schools as they plan for and implement comprehensive inquiry-based science programs. The volunteer will work with the SPI center staff to prepare materials for institutes and events, conduct on-line research, assist with grant writing, prepare making materials and attend institutes and events. Experience in science, science education and teaching will be a plus. Interest in science is essential. Internet and Microsoft Office skills are required as well as willingness to perform a wide range of tasks.  
A-SPAN   Arlington   Administrative Assistant   14 & up   Volunteer opportunities include: Assistant Front Desk Monitor, Administrative Assistant, Preparation and Serving for the Homeless Bagged Meal Program.  
Fairfax County Public Libraries   Various   Administrative Assistant   12 & up   Work side by side with staff in every Library activity. There is an ongoing need at most branches for help checking books in and out, sorting and shelving, assisting with special projects, creating and maintaining databases, demonstrating new technologies to the public, answering phones, shelf-reading (Adopt-a-Shelf!), gardening, and more. The contact info for each branch's volunteer coordinator is in the file and on the web.  
Lewinsville Adult Day Care Center   McLean   Administrative Assistant   13 & up   Work with the elderly. Opportunities include serving snack; helping run large or small group games; doing administrative duties; and doing research on the computer. Center programming hours are 9 AM - 4 PM M-F. Computer skills and musical talents not a requirement but can be used. If you are an instrumentalist or entertainer, contact Ms. Combs to schedule a time to share your talents.  
National Center for Victims of Crime   DC   Administrative Assistant   18 & up   Various volunteer/unpaid internship opportunities - office-related work.  
WETA Public TV   Arlington   Administrative Assistant   16 & up   Answer phones live on-air during membership campaigns in March, August and December. Time commitment: 3-5 shift, mostly evenings, some weekend afternoons available. Also, opportunities for adjunct staff members, assisting with online and educational activites, answering phones, helping with guest check-ins at WETA-hosted events.  
Fairfax County Animal Shelter - FAIRFAX   Fairfax   Animals   18 & up   Job opportunities include dog kennel assistant and cat room assistant. There is a six month minimum volunteer commitment, with at least 6 hours per month. Must be at least 18 years old. We do not have a junior volunteer program for those under 18, at this time.  
Lift Me Up   Fairfax   Animals   14 & up   Experience/comfort level working with horses and individuals with disabilities very helpful. Schedule and volunteer opportunities more active in spring and summer than in winter.  
Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program   Fairfax   Animals   14 & up   Volunteers are currently needed in the following areas: Horse Leaders, Sidewalkers, Fundraising, and Stable Maintenance. Volunteers commit to one day (approx 3 hrs) per week for the 8-12 week session. Training is provided and horse experience is valued but not required.  
Easter Seals Child Development Centers   Falls Church   Assistant to Teacher   14 & up   Part-time classroom aide or office assistant: Volunteer opportunities are available in classrooms, therapy and development playgroups. - Reading to children, organizing, cleaning toys, web surfing for theme related activities, sharing ideas.  
Smithsonian Associates, Summer Camp   DC   Assistant to Teacher   15 & up   Youth Teacher Assistants offer support to the instructors of the camp. Please see website for specific camp descriptions. Application available on-line and also in file. An interview will be scheduled once the application is reviewed.  
George Washington University Hospital   DC   Auxiliary Patient Support   17 & up   Candidates must be mature, have a sense of responsibility and dependability, and a positive attitude. They should have an interest in people, a desire to help others, and should be doing well academically in school, with above average grades. Candidates must complete an application and provide 2 letters of recommendation. Consent is needed from a parent or guardian and a health clearance from their physician. The application is the same for all volunteer positions and programs, and may be downloaded from the website. Call the phone number above for further information.  
Georgetown University Hospital   DC   Auxiliary Patient Support   15 & up   - Assist employees, patients and visitors in inpatient and outpatient areas. - Provide clerical assistance in hospital administration office. - Guide individuals throughout the facility with our Wayfinding Program.  
INOVA Fairfax Hospital - Teen Volunteer Program   Fairfax   Auxiliary Patient Support   15 & up   Two Teen Volunteer Programs are available: Summer (June-August) and School Year (October-June). Must attend a mandatory information meeting (in May for Summer session or September for School Year Session. All volunteers must commit to at least one 3-4 hours shift per week. Opportunities are available in patient support services, hospital elder life program, gift shops, medical library, medical records, and peer tutoring.  
INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital   Alexandria   Auxiliary Patient Support   14 & up   The Inova Mount Vernon Auxiliary also awards scholarship and savings bonds to selected junior volunteers who give their time and talents to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. Prince William Health System   Prince William   Auxiliary Patient Support   16 & up   Application available in file. Requirements to apply for the program: be at least 16 years old at the time application is submitted; have a "B" average; personal interview; recommendation from school guidance counselor; should be considering a career in the healthcare profession or service-oriented field; be helpful, caring and have a positive attitude.  
Reston Hospital Center   Reston   Auxiliary Patient Support   16 & up   Volunteer opportunities include: Information Desk, Gift Shop, and Floor Assignment.  
Common Ground Child Care   Reston   Child Care   16 & up   Jobs include an opportunity to work in small group activities such as reading and telling stories or doing art; and working with the preschool children. Regarding time commitment, they are willing to work with your schedule.  
Northern Virginia Family Service   Falls Church   Child Care and Office Work   16 & up   Volunteer opportunities include: mentor children, perform home maintenance/repairs, work in Clock Tower Thrift Shop, teach ESL classes .  
Arlington TOPSoccer   Arlington   Coach   12 & up   TOPSoccer is the USYSA program for kids with mental and physical disabilities, ages 4-19. Volunteer "buddies" give players one on one instruction.  
McLean Youth Track and Field   McLean   Coach   14 & up   Track trainer - helping kids to learn to run long distances from 100 meters to 5K and the techniques of jumping and throwing events, Operate fundamentals of track program, including practices and meets. Practices on Wednesdays 5:30 -6:30 at Cooper Middle School; Meets Sunday afternoons April and May at Langley HS. Jr. Olympics qualifying meet 1st Sunday in June. Help also needed in the fall season.  
Special Olympics - Virginia   Fairfax   Coach   13 & up   Volunteers are used as coaches, event organizers, unified partners, fundraisers and to generate public awareness. Programs include the following sports: Basketball (December-March), Figure Skating (October-January), Speed Skating (October-January), Alpine Skiing (November-January), Aquatics (February-April), Gymnastics (year round), Track & Field (April-June), Softball (April-June), Golf (August - November), Soccer (August-November), Powerlifting (Year round), Equestrian (August-November), and Bowling (Year round)  
Alzheimer's Family Day Center   Various   Companion   16 & up   Many volunteer opportunities including: playing the piano; assisting people with eating; helping prepare and distribute lunch; bringing in pets for pet therapy sessions; serving food at celebrations; giving manicures; and visiting with participants. Fairfax Pets On Wheels   Various   Companion   18 & up   Fairfax Pets on Wheels, Inc. is a volunteer program sponsored by the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging. Volunteers and their pets provide pet therapy to improve the quality of life of area nursing home residents. Volunteers share a pet and an hour or two of their time on a regular basis. Other volunteer roles include working on committees and special projects, volunteer appreciation activities, educational training, event support, fund raising, newsletter articles, office support, and temperament testing.  
Goodwin House, Inc   Falls Church   Companion   16 & up   Must be at least 16 years old to volunteer individually; those younger than 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Most of the volunteer hours are during the day so this may be difficult for students during the school year. Volunteers opportunities include general administration, friendly visits, reading, computer training, sharing special talents (e.g., music, dance), gardening, and art/music program assistance. Volunteers can enjoy the new Olympic size swimming pool and fitness center.  
Holiday Project   Various   Companion     Volunteer to visit with nursing home residents and hospital patients during various holidays.  
Leewood Healthcare Center   Annandale   Companion     Looking for rising juniors and seniors to work with senior adults one or more times each week or to provide entertainment each month. Other opportunities available in the nursing home and assisted living programs.  
Little River Glen Senior Center   Fairfax   Companion     Senior Citizen Aide. Open M-F 10-3. If you can play or sing consider volunteering on a teacher workday or during school holidays, 15-30 minutes of lively music preferred and very much appreciated by senior adults. Piano and organ on premises.  
Woodbine Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center   Alexandria   Companion   14 & up   Volunteers will be involved in the Activities Department keeping the residents active and busy throughout the day. After-school, evening and weekend hours are available. Sample activities including helping with Bingo, providing musical entertainment, helping with "happy hours" refreshements and accompanying clients on outings. No minimum number of hours. If you volunteer for more than 10 hours a week, you must have a recent TB test. Training is provided.  
Arc of DC, Inc   DC   Computer Tech   14 & up   Volunteers to help with data entry and office/mailing assistance.  
Architecture for Humanity     Computer Tech   14 & up   AFHDC is a network of socially responsible professionals who serve as catalysts to transform the architectural landscape of humanity at large. The organization needs student volunteers with CAD and/or Graphic Design skills.  
Computer C.O.R.E.   Alexandria   Computer Tech   16 & up   CORE is seeking TJ student volunteers (age 16 and up) in their Refurbishment Lab to fix up computers donated from local businesses.  
St. Mark's Lutheran Church   Springfield   Computer Tech   14 & up   Assist in computer training class for immigrants living in the community near the church. One on one tutoring in basic computer skills with older congregants (evening hours and weekends available). Update old computers as needed. Other church programs include homeless shelter and ESL (volunteers do not need to speak a foreign language).  
Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial   Arlington   Docent   16 & up   Talk to visitors; give guided tours to elementary students. Curatorial work on archival collections: detail oriented. Transcriber: transcribe letters and manuscripts from archives. Historical guide. Administrative assistant. Dress in period clothing.  
Claude Moore Colonial Farm   McLean   Docent   12 & up   Organization welcomes student volunteers. Long term projects and internships are available. Opportunities to work a few hours occasionally are also available. Email volunteers@1771.org. Through the Apprentice Program, youth volunteers aged 10 to 17 portray colonial children for the Farm's visitors, as well as doing such behind-the-scenes work as helping in the office, cleaning animal pens, and tending greenhouse crops. Apprentices must attend an Orientation for the Apprentice Program and provide their own 18th century clothing in accordance with the Farm's clothing standards. Parents who complete 10 hours of volunteer work receive a $50 rebate off the $90 annual program fee. Apprentices are required to volunteer at least once per month from April through November. They may volunteer more often, and throughout the winter months, but it is not required. The apprentice season runs year round, though new apprentices are recruited and trained only at the beginning of each year. The deadline has passed for the 2008 season.  
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum   DC   Docent   16 & up   The museum's mission is to remember the millions who perished in the Holocaust and to educate the public about this tragic chapter in history. Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale   Various   Food Service     Register online to sponsor a bake sale. Hold your bake sale. Send in your funds. Share Our Strength will distribute the funds to the highest-need areas in America as well as innovative child hunger programs.  
Fairfax County Park Aurthority   Various   Life and Physical Sciences   14 & up   Volunteer opportunities are as varied as the parks. With more than 20,000 acres of parkland, the Park Authority has ballfields, lakes, RECenters, golf courses, nature centers, historic sites, a working farm and a horticulture center. Fairfax County Park Authority - Counselor in Training   Various   Life and Physical Sciences   14 & up   Alexandria, Annandale, Chantilly, Falls Church, Franconia, McLean, Oakton and Springfield. Counselor in Training (CIT) Program offered during the summer at rec centers, parks and rec-pacs. Each CIT will be assigned to a counselor and a group of children. Acceptance into the program is based on an application and interview. A minimum commitment of two weeks is required. Placement of CITs is limited due to the number of locations and staff hours. Registration is in May-June timeframe. Summer program will be posted in April.  
Levine School of Music   Arlington   Music     Administrative Volunteers are dedicated people who assist the Levine School of Music staff by providing administrative support. Volunteers assist the staff with mailings, word processing, filing, cataloging the music library and myriad tasks essential to the daily workings of the school. Volunteers are also needed for event assisitance and to serve as Ushers. Ushers serve as liaisons for the Levine School Of Music welcoming, directing, and assisting visitors prior to performances on weekends and special functions during the week. Members field an array of questions and provide basic information about the School to enhance the guest experience.  
Alzheimer's Association   Fairfax   Office Work   14 & up   Office work opportunities are available. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator to determine what duties are appropriate for you.  
American Red Cross   Fairfax   Office Work   14 & up   Opportunities for youth volunteers include Health and Safety Instructor, Blood Drive volunteer, and others. Leadership opportunities include Youth Leadership Development Conference (YLDC), a week long experiential learning event. The Youth Task Force is a youth-run, youth-led, and youth organized group which develops leadership skills, creates friendships among diverse groups of youth, and teaches youth to be role models. Volunteers from D.C., Virginia, and Maryland plan and carry out service projects that create awareness and meet community needs. Arlington County Chapter also hosts the Youth Team, every other Wed night and 1-2 weekends/mnth. See file for contact info.  
Artisphere   Arlington   Office Work   14 & up   Assistance is needed with administrative tasks associated with folklore, multi-cultural festivals and programs. Call 703-228-1899 for more info. Also, volunteers are needed for summer outdoor concert series. Call 703-228-1845 for more info.  
City at Peace   DC   Office Work   13 & up   Showtime volunteers user, run concessions, work the box office, and sell merchandise. Office volunteers perform administrative tasks such as making phone calls, handling paperwork, stuffing envelopes, etc.  
Clock Tower Thrift Shop   Various   Office Work   16 & up   Sort, tag and organize donated items at either of two locations. One-time projects are available. Students may prearrange work schedules by calling the individual shops listed below. Apply online.  
Hartwood Foundation   Springfield   Office Work     Duties would include filing, organization, general office assistance, possible data input and removal, home maintenance, and group home activities. Students younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult to volunteer with consumers in a community based group home. You may work alone or in a group. To work directly with consumers, each volunteer must have a current Tuberculosis test.  
Mason Small Business Development Center (SBDC)     Office Work     Volunteer as an Operational Intern. Obtain hands-on experience in entrepreneurship and business through project and administrative work at the center. If interested apply online.  
Mental Health Centers   Chantilly   Office Work   15 & up   Most volunteer opportunities are for adults (18+) and require a background check. Teens may provide administrative support at the Chantilly office.. They are willing to have you work once or on an on-going basis.  
Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM)   Falls Church   Office Work   14 & up   NOVAM has volunteer opportunities in five separate areas: Upcoming Events, Community Outreach, Office Support, Special Events, and Holiday Support.  
Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States   Various   Outdoors     Some of the volunteer opportunities with BLM can be found in the file. For the most current listings go to www.volunteer.gov/gov or link to the USA Freedom Corps website from the BLM website. Both outdoor and clerical opportunities are available. The Eastern States Office is located in Springfield.  
Clean Fairfax Council   Fairfax   Outdoors     The council sponsors local litter cleanups by providing free bags, safety vests, hats, gloves, and other supplies to self-directed volunteer groups.  
Discovery Creek   Various   Outdoors   13 - 17   Weekend volunteers welcome and direct families coming to the museum, work on art projects with children, help out on hikes, assist with setup and cleanup of the site and, much more! Summer Camp Counselors: assist staff with camp programs; participate in outdoor activities; work with children.  
Earth Sangha   Various   Outdoors     Help run the Wild Plant Nursery. Help restore degraded forest in local parks, plan native vegetation, and develop native-plant gardens for schools/parks in the DC area. Help remove invasive, alien plants.  
Fairfax County 4-H   Fairfax   Outdoors   9 & up   Each member conducts one or more educational projects. Research-based projects range from aerospace to wood working and include animal projects, food and nutrition, gardening, health, photography, environment, public speaking, and wildlife.  
Fairfax County Park Authority - Invasive Management Area Program   Various   Outdoors     Remove invasive plants and help restore sites with native plantings.  
Fairfax Releaf   Fairfax   Outdoors   6 & up   Various opportunities: tree planters, seed gatherers, tree salvagers, office workers, information booth workers, and graphics artists. Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia   Various   Outdoors   16 & up   Build houses for the needy or volunteer at the ReStore (located at 7770-G Richmond Highway, Alexandria) where duties include collecting and receiving donated materials, pricing and stocking items, assisting customers and running the cash register. Volunteers under the age of 18 need parental permission. .  
Lake Accotink Park   Springfield   Outdoors     If you enjoy the outdoors and keeping some variety in your life, consider volunteering your time and talents to the park.  
National Park Service - Department of the Interior   Various   Outdoors   14 & up   Opportunities include: clerical work; program assistants; manager of Cabin Camps; leading natural and cultural history walks and talks; assisting curators and historians; assisting natural resource managers and biologists; carpentry; roving trails via foot or bike patrol; and assisting with special events (festivals, open houses, annual observances). Information desk, trail restoration computer work, web page design and maintenance, etc. Training will be provided, if required.

Stewardship Virginia   Various   Outdoors     Various volunteer opportunities in conservation. Examples include water monitoring, restoring stream banks, cleaning up litter, weeding out nonindigenous plants, building and maintaining trails, cultural heritage projects, enhancing habitats, mapping wildlife, and tagging fish.  
Student Conservation Association Conservation Crews   Arlington   Outdoors   15 & up   Several opportunities, including work on conservation crews for 6 weeks during summer within or outside DC area and office projects at Arlington office. Previous experience is not required. Their lives and stories compelled the creation of Teaching HOPE, an organization founded to empower orphaned teens. Our goal is to help these children become responsible adults and break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. Teaching HOPE's pilot project is in Colombia, South America, where millions of children and families have been displaced by violence and marginalized by poverty. Please note, we have no volunteer opportunities in Colombia at this time.
