Dr. Mary C. McDowell, Assistant Principal

Dr. Mary McDowell grew up in South Carolina and graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She lived and worked in different parts of the country with her Air Force husband. These travels included a brief period back in South Carolina where she earned her Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Science and certification to teach Biology from Winthrop University. Dr. McDowell taught in classrooms in North Carolina for four years, part-time in Fairfax County for one semester, and taught a Biology class for NOVA for one semester. In August of 1998 she joined the staff of George Mason High School in Falls Church where she worked for eleven years. At George Mason, Dr. McDowell taught all levels of Biology, served as the Department Leader and 8-12 Science Curriculum Coordinator. She became an Assistant Principal at the school in July of 2006. In July of 2008, Dr. McDowell was named the Interim Principal for the school and held this position until a permanent principal was appointed in April of 2009. Dr. McDowell successfully completed the requirements for a Doctorate in Administration and Supervision, from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, in April of 2009. She joined the Thomas Jefferson staff in August of 2009 as an Assistant Principal.

Dr. McDowell has two adult children, a daughter and a son. She enjoys spending time at her rural home in Loudoun County with her family while having easy access to all the amenities and cultural opportunities that the Washington D.C. area has to offer.
