Biographies:

Coach Luis: After 12 years coaching in Spain, including six with C.F Juventud Madrid (Real Madrid sister school), Coach Luis decided to move to the USA, in 2001, to be part of the soccer growth in this country. Since then, Coach Luis has been part of the Arlington Travel Soccer Club, assistant coach for the ODP program and head coach for the Gallaudet University Men Soccer team. Currently, he coaches the Division 1 U-17 Arlington Titans, the U-13 Arlington Blue Force and the U-17 NOVA Royals for the Super-Y League. Coach Luis is very excited with this new challenge at Thomas Jefferson HS.

Coach Zito: Coach Zito played professionally in Brasil, his native country and also played professionally as a goalkeeper in Washington, D.C., for the Washington Darts. Coach Zito has been a coached various select teams (comprised mostly of students from northern Virginia schools, including TJHSST) to impressive standings. He also coached the boys U-16 Team USA and went on a European Tour in 1985, earning a third place finish in the Holland Cup. Coach Zito has been a high school coach for Bishop O’Connell Boys Varsity Team as well as for Washington-Lee High School, both in Arlington, VA.

Coach Houston: Coach Houston has played soccer for over 25 years and currently plays year-round for one or more teams at a time in adult soccer leagues in northern Virginia. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and although she wasn’t nearly good enough to play for the Tar Heels, she hopes some of the luck and talent of their womens soccer legacy rubbed off on her. She has a single season of assistant coaching experience under her belt and is looking forward to a second great year with the girls in the TJ soccer program.

Philosophy

We will play attractive and smart soccer. Practices will be the base to fully develop each player’s potential. We want you to enjoy your high school soccer experience through respect, commitment, good attitude, and hard work. At TJHSST, academics will always come first. Players are permitted to miss practice to study … but only after talking with their coaches. Nevertheless, we expect that each player will manage her schedule to miss as few practices and games as possible. Players are required to notify coaches in advance if they are going to miss a practice or a game for any reason.

Games

  • Regular game times: 5:30pm (JV) and 7:00pm (Varsity)
  • Coaches expect players to arrive at the game field a full 45 minutes before kick-off, dressed properly, and ready to begin warm-up. Arriving late will affect your starting and may affect your playing time.
  • Field position and amount of playing time are not guaranteed for any player.

Practices

  • You will receive a complete practice schedule for the entire season.
  • You are expected to arrive at the practice field, dressed properly and ready to practice at the established start time.
  • You are expected to attend every practice and to put forth your best effort at all times. Missing a practice without notifying the coaches in advance will result in a suspension.
  • Varsity players will practice:
    • Monday mornings before school. (Location TBA)
    • Tuesdays-Fridays: 4:15pm-5:45/6:00pm at Holmes Middle School.
    • Some Saturday, 8th period, and combined varsity/JV practices will be scheduled.
  • Dress: Players are required to wear a white t-shirt to each practice. In addition, players must wear shorts (only the goalkeepers may wear long pants), shin guards, and sports bras. The coaches highly recommend wearing compression shorts underneath outer soccer shorts. Players are expected to dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
  • Water will not be provided for you on the practice field. You must bring your own water bottle.
  • Bring your own correctly pumped regulation soccer ball.

Uniforms & Equipment

HOME and AWAY jerseys, shorts, a bag, and a warm-up top will be issued to each player. Please follow the washing instructions to ensure these uniforms last for future years. All equipment must be turned in at the end of season in the condition in which it was issued. If any part of the uniform, including the bag, is missing or damaged, you will have to pay the cost of replacement.

Team captains will dictate game day uniform dress code.

Participation in Extracurricular Activities at TJHSST

Participation in extra-curricular activities at TJ is a privilege, not a right. You are representing our school on and off the field and we expect you to meet the highest standards.

Please read the Extracurricular Participation Policy carefully before signing it. If you have any questions about the policy, please ASK.

Requirements

  1. Academic class attendance: Students must attend a full day of classes on the day of competition to be eligible to compete. The Student Activities Office will check attendance at the end of each day for all student athlete absences and will report ineligible players to the coaching staff.

  1. Good citizenship: This is a MUST for all student athletes both on and off TJ school grounds. If you are assigned detention or suspension from school, you will not be allowed to practice or play with the team. Further disciplinary sanctions may be awarded.

  1. Substance abuse: Student athletes are required to refrain at all times – including non-school hours and during any school related activity – from the use, possession, and/or distribution of alcohol, tobacco products, and illegal drugs. If you violate this policy, you will be subject to the following penalties, which are separate and apart from penalties associated with the violation of the Student Responsibilities and Rights:

    1. First offense: Suspension for 1-6 games. (Allowed to participate in practice. Still eligible for letter and post-season awards.)
    2. Second offense: Suspension from practice and games for the remainder of the season. Not eligible for letter or post-season awards.

You are responsible for your choices and actions. Making poor choices and behaving badly will hurt not only yourself, but also your team. The coaches hope and want you to make the right decisions and if you have any questions, concerns, or doubts, you may talk to anyone on the coaching staff.

Lettering Requirements (Varsity)

A player will earn a letter by ending the season in good standing by:

  • Finishing out the season completely AND
  • Returning all issued equipment in good condition

AND, in addition, by meeting at least 1 of the following requirements:

  • Missing fewer than 3 practices; OR
  • Playing in all but 3 or fewer games; OR
  • According to a decision of the coaching staff (such as in the case of injury or promotion from the JV team during the season).

Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC)

TJHSST Trainers:

Heather Murphy, ATC: Heather.Murphy@fcps.edu (Head Trainer)

Kemba Ford, ATC: Kemba.Ford@fcps.edu (Assistant Trainer)

TJ Training Room:

703-932-1953 or 703-750-8387

When injured, a player must visit the trainers each day, follow their instructions, and maintain open and clear communication with both trainers and coaches. Following an injury, a player cannot return to participation until cleared by the trainer, who will provide written authorization to return.

Please note: If a player requires wrap before an away game, she must visit the TJ trainer before leaving school to be wrapped here or to receive an official pink slip that will allow the player to be wrapped by the trainer of the opposing team. A player must have this official form to be wrapped by another trainer. If not properly wrapped, the player will not be permitted to play.
