This is just a regular text file, the kind that would normally % have an extension of .txt, but which you should give the extension .qbq, for % "quiz bowl questions." You should write the files in Notepad or some other % text editor, like Vim (www.vim.org), or whatever. Please do not send me any % questions in Microsoft Word format from now on. The syntax and formatting % for these files is displayed below. See those percent signs at the beginning % of these lines? Those are comments. They aren't totally necessary, but it's % helpful if anything that isn't part of a question is commented out. Now, on % to the show. TOSSUP Here are the words in the tossup. Here are some more words. Make sure the line ends with one space, then a new line. Lines should be $\leq 80$ characters long. If you have a word that's hard to pronounce, like Dniepopetrovsk [NYE-po-pe-TROVSK] the pronunciation guide goes between square brackets. This sample tossup is nearly long enough, so here's the end. A: The _Answer_, with the required part(s) surrounded by _these_. (Here's more information on acceptability, between parentheses. The required parts of all _promptable_ responses should have _underscores_ around them too. Did you notice the blank line between the tossup and the answer?) BONUS Here's the introduction to the bonus. [Special instructions to the reader also go between square brackets.] 10: Here's the first bonus part. A: Here's the _answer_, once again after a blank line. 10: Here's the first clue for the second bonus part. 5: Here's the second clue. Did you notice the blank line and the different point value on the left? And how indenting doesn't matter? A: Now, here's the _answer_. 5-5: There are two answers to this clue, worth five points each. A: Here's one _answer_, and here's _another_, both part of the same line. TOSSUP This tossup only exists so I can demonstrate a list bonus. As such, it's not very long and doesn't demonstrate anything interesting. A: Do you _really care_? BONUS Here's the introduction to the list bonus, with the question and point value and everything all right here. Also mention if it's an ordering bonus, but you really shouldn't be writing many of those. LIST Every _answer_ is _on its own line_ without _any bullets or anything_ at the _beginning of the line_. Got _it_? TOSSUP This tossup only exists so I can demonstrate math and a 5-10-15-20 bonus. As for math, the questions will be typeset using something called LaTeX, and equations should go between dollar signs. $x^2+2y$ is an example. If you happen to be writing math, IM me for help. If you want to type a normal dollar sign, please type \$, as in \$13 million. That will save me time. A: _42_ BONUS This is a ``five points for one correct answer, ten for two, etc'' bonus. Also, notice the quotes? Use ``two backticks and two apostrophes'' instead of the quote mark key, if you please. Q: Here's a clue. Notice the ``Q'' instead of a number. A: And here's the _answer_. Q: Here's another clue. A: And _so on_...
