Fashion

Nunn, Joan. Fashion in Costume 1200-1980. Avon: The Herbert Press, 1984. This book has useful information on fashion in Europe and America for the period states in its title.

Ewing, Elizabeth. History of 20th Century Fashion. London: B.T. Batsford, 1974. This book has a well rounded collection of information on 20th century fashion, including several sketches and photographs as well as advertisements from the periods and information on advancements that led to changed in fashion.

Peacock, John. The Chronicle of Western Fashion. New York : Harry N. Abrahms, 1991. This book give a largely pictorial history, with brief descriptions, of fashion in many cultures throughout several eras.

Cooke, Mervyn. The Chronicle of Jazz. 1997. New York City: Abbeville Press. 1998. This book is set up as an extremely extensive and detailed timeline, supplemented by short articles covering major trends, musicians, composers, and places of interest. The timeline itself is too detailed to give a good overview, but the brief summaries heading each section are extremely useful.

Wallace, Carol, et al. Dance: A Very Social History. 1986. New York City: The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Though it is occasionally difficult to locate information, this book is extremely engaging. The many photographs add a lot to the reader’s understanding of the subject, and the writing style is accessible and informative.

Architecture

A Guide to Colorado Architecture. 1999-2004. Colorado Historical Society. April 8, 2004 [http://www.coloradohistory-oahp.org/guides/architecture/styles/tudor.htm]. This site is specific to Colorado, but some of the architecture style patterns were general enough to be relevant.

Architectural Styles of America. Nov 2003. Dr. Tom Paradis. April 8, 2004 [http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~twp/architecture/colonialrevival/]. This site was a really excellent reference for the architecture styles. I based my outline of the styles on the outline they used on this site.

Balloon-Frame Houses. 2004. Houghton Mifflin. April 8, 2004 [http://college.hmco.com/history/readerscomp/rcah/html/ah_007300_balloonframe.htm]. I only used this site for my paragraph on balloon frame houses. It just describes the definition of balloon frame houses and how they came about.

Illustrated Architecture Dictionary. 2004. Chuck LaChiusa. April 8, 2004 [http://ah.bfn.org/a/DCTNRY/vocab.html]. This is an excellent site if you need a definition for an architecture term. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Library of Congress. "Library of Congress." Prints and Photographs. . Library of Congress. April 8, 2004 [http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/catalog.html]. All of the pictures on the architecture section of this website came from the Library of Congress.

McAlester, Lee; McAlester, Virginia. A Field Guide to American Houses. USA: Borzoi, 1984. This is an overall guide to American architectural styles. I used it to look up vocabulary.

Rifkind, Carole. A Field Guide to American Architecture. Markham, Ontario: New American Library, 1980. This is a review of both residential and ecclesiastical architecture. I focused on the residential architecture.

Schifflett, Crandall. Almanacs of American Life, Victorian America. General Editor: Richard Balkin, 1996. This was useful in that it included why architecture developed the way it did after the Civil War.

This Fabulous Century, 1870-1900. Editor: Jerry Korn, Series Editor: Erza Bowen. Time Inc., 1970. This was another good source of general information dealing with general architecture development.

Wiffen, Marcus. American Architecture Since 1780. Cambridge, Massachusetts: The M.I.T. Press, 1988. This is a collection of architectural styles with descriptions and pictures. It is organized by time period, and goes into very specific detail. I used the book mostly to find names of buildings to look up for my pictures.

Entertainment

Altman, Linda Jacobs. The Decade that Roared, America During Prohibition. 21st Century Books, 1997. This book was very useful for the information on the 1920s.

Bivans, Anne-Marie. “The History of Pageants.” April 10, 2004. http://www.pageantcenter.com/pageant_history.html. This is where I found the information on the Miss America Pageant.

Dirks, Tim. “Academy Awards: The Oscars.” April 10, 2004. http://www.filmsite.org/oscars.html.
Here I found film information, and the date of the first Academy Awards.

Schlereth, Thomas J. Victorian America, Transformations in Everyday Life. Harper Collins Publisher, Inc., 1991. This was incredibly helpful in finding the customs and games of the time.
