The Biotechnology Laboratory is sponsored by KPMG.
The corporation is providing Jefferson's biotechnology
department with an annual donation of $10,000 over the course of
three years, between Fall 2000 and Spring 2003. The
funding has enabled both the junior and senior research programs
in the Biotechnology Laboratory to proceed in such a manner that
they are no longer restricted by the lack of supplies or
outdated equipment.
During the current school year,
KPMG's generous contribution has been used to purchase 10
automatic micropipets; these instruments are critical for the
dispensing of microvolumes of bioreagents. In addition,
much of the laboratory's restriction enzyme and DNA -- items at
the core of the curriculum -- inventories have been replaced
with fresh, viable biomolecules.
KPMG's funding has also covered
the expenditures associated with protein reagents that were used
for the purpose of isolating and separating proteins from
various fish species. The biotechnology department has
also been able to perform Western blots to identify specific
proteins with antibodies. Both of these processes are
allowing juniors to be better prepared for some of the various
senior experiences -- here at TJHSST and at private and
government research institutions.
The Biotechnology Laboratory is
currently in the process of updating the water-still apparatus
for the department as well, thanks in part to KPMG's
donation. The still in place at present does not provide
the department with the copious amounts of distilled water
necessary for conducting molecular research. Gel
electrophoresis and digital gel visualization devices are also
being ordered.
KPMG, itself, helps clients successfully respond to changing
opportunities by providing professional services, whenever and
wherever they are needed. The corporation has tailored its
