This period in US history is marked by great leaps in transportation, communication, and industrialization. Through the development of roads, railroads and canals, Americans were able to fulfill their Manifest Destiny and inhabit the western reaches of the continent. The development of the factory system and machinery for simple tasks led to the growth of the US as a world power. Widening technological gaps in the country provided a large advantage for the North during the Civil War.
