10 Grade Personal And Community Health
COURSE RATIONALE
Americans spend more money on health than any other people in the world. We have some of the world’s most sophisticated medical technology and well-trained doctors. However, millions of Americans die prematurely or suffer disabilities that are totally or partially preventable.
The average American born in the 1980s can expect to live to be approximately 75 years old as compared with the average of just over 49 years old in 1900. People are not only healthier today than in previous generation, they are also more health conscious. We are constantly being bombarded with health information and advice from a variety of sources-parents, family, friends, school and the media. Despite this abundance of information, studies show that most Americans actually know very little about health. We are given very little guidance on how to evaluate all the information and advice offered. Young people need to be taught how to make informed health-related decisions throughout their lifetime.
Most of us take our health for granted. Our lives are no longer threatened by the deadly diseases that plagued our ancestors. Instead, lifestyle-related diseases and conditions (heart disease, cancer, stress, obesity, alcoholism and AIDS) affect present generations.
This is especially true of teenagers. Young people have the opportunity to live longer and healthier lives due to better nutrition; the development of vaccines, antibiotics, and other drugs; and improved sanitary practices. However, the rate for teenage mortality is alarmingly high. Many teenagers make poor health-related decisions. They engage in high-risk behaviors, such as the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and premarital sexual activity. Accidents, suicides, and homicides, not diseases, are the leading causes of death among teens.
Health means more than just the absence of illness or injury. TJHSST health students will explore the seven dynamic components of the wheel of health. Good health is not a matter of luck. This unit will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to take positive action to ensure their health and wellness in the future.
