Logs1/21/2004Added a research section, outlining several methods, and changed the title of this project - I like this better. Hopefully I have enough to present on and create a poster tomorrow. That's the plan, anyway. 1/20/2004No school on Monday; today I mostly listened to oral presentations throughout the class. Really need to get my presentation done... poster too. Soon, I hope. 1/15/2004I was a bad person today - I worked on setting up more services in the sound lab. Futily searched for midi cables for about half an hour, then eventually realized that we didn't have a gameport interface in the computer anyway. Hooked up the keyboard so at least the sound goes to the 4 speakers in the soundlab. Also set up the scanner. 1/13/2004Conducted some research on various algorithms, and collected some links. Realized today that implementing some of these might be harder than first expected. 1/12/2004I'm afraid I've done even worse this time - it's been over a month. In December, I didn't make a whole lot of progress on this project, busy with the holiday season, college applications, and such. I did make some progress on my weather station software, however; now, there's a rudimentary interface to the AWS protocol and the code is much cleaner. Now I've begun making some progress again, beginning to implement the various algorithms, as well as putting together a poster. 11/20/2003Ack, I've gotten ungodly behind on logs. Haven't made a lot of progress on the project, I've been really busy keeping the servers running and up to date. Humboldt has been consistently dying, so one day was dedicated to moving all services on Humboldt over to Macaroni. I have been learning about the music language ABC, however. I think I'm going to use it instead of Csound, because its syntax is more straightforward and can easily be converted to either midi or postscript. I have also made a little progress on my side project, the weather station. I discovered and fixed the bug that changed all values of 13 to 10, so data is more accurate now; wind direction still seems to be flaky, however. 10/30/2003Relatively little accomplished, I couldn't focus very well. I think the weather station is working now, though the wind direction (and possibly speed?) doesn't seem right. Further investigation is necessary. I was able to revise my project proposal, however. As for the research paper... that's in a bit more trouble. 10/28/2003Successfully made a csound "orchestra" and score that accomplishes very little besides playing several scales. Check it out in the code section. 10/27/2003I fixed some issues with AFS resulting from King's failure on Sunday. Still not entirely sure what happened, hopefully it won't happen again. 10/23/2003What did I do? I do not remember. 10/21/2003PSAT day - no class. 10/20/2003Today I compiled mplayer on hydrogen, so we can play various movie formats in the lab. 10/16/2003Today has been a semi-productive day. I finally gave this site a better layout, one that actually looks decent and is usable. Next step is getting content on this site, including code. 10/15/2003Rather short day today. Began reading into the use of Csound, and compiled a quick testfile as described here. It ran fine, but none of the computers were able to play it - more investigation into that is necessary, probably a needed kernel module. Beginning of October through 10/14/2003Sorry I haven't been very good with the logs - I've been rather busy. Humboldt has spontaneously kept dying, so I've been working to try and make it reliable again. Intranet is now running on Macaroni, so hopefully that issue is resolved for now. 9/25/2003OpenSSL works again! Hooray! (That's about all there is for today.) Today was more server work. I apt-get upgraded most of the servers, got the lan port reenabled for Macaroni, and began work on getting the configuration files for mail and intranet into AFS. Also began to look into MySQL replication. (Sidenote: it's really nifty in Mozilla Firebird - I typed in "mysql replication" in the address bar, and it took me right to the page I wanted. Must be using Google's Lucky or something.) Hopefully soon Macaroni will be a hot backup slave for Humboldt, in case it decides to spontaneously die again. Soon. 9/22/2003King spontaneously died right before school - maybe another hard drive is dead? - so I spent the first part of the period fixing that. As it was a 2-hour delay, classes were only 30 mins long, and I didn't accomplish much else. 9/18/2003Hurricane day - no school. Notice that the weather station is not giving accurate data for the wind speed and direction, so I emailed AWS. It turns out that the datalogger needs to be upgraded after all. 9/15/2003Worked on creating a CA (certificate authority) for the TJ computer systems lab. Soon we should be able to sign certificates (so we can have SSL again). 9/11/2003As humboldt is becoming increasingly unstable, I installed linux on macaroni (old intranet). Didn't finish the job, but it's close. 9/9/2003Turned in my preliminary project proposal, and got this page up. 9/8/2003Short day, didn't really accomplish much in class. Did some research, but not much done. 9/4/2003Second day of school; thought about project idea. Wrote preliminary project proposal on possible idea; currently thinking of working on artificial intelligence with music generation. 9/2/2003First day of school, not much happened. Discussed project proposals given last year, and decided that my work on the weather station is not very research-y. It will have to be a side project, assuming I get some free time soon. |
