At the end of the philosophy class you will have the opportunity to demonstrate some original, real world, applied philosophy research and understanding in a variety of ways. Because of the number of students this must be done in groups of 3-5.  Each group will have 10-15 minutes to present and engage the class in discussion. 30 points

Philosophy of Music (or Art) (or Film)
Groups will select musical pieces (or works of art) that have a philosophically based message. For the music, make copies of the lyrics, play selections from the music in class, and lead the class on a discussion about what the artist(s) is (are) saying. For Art, bring copies or use PowerPoint to display the piece(s).Challenge the class with one or two questions to help them begin viewing.Lead a discussion of what can be found. You may want to consult an art teacher, music teacher, or other knowledgeable sources for appropriate subjects.  See me if you have questions.
Down side- Most groups pick music and some take the philosophy lightly.  They figure they'll just play music.
Film groups don't have the time to show a lot of a movie.  Sometimes a section of a script works better.

Video
Form a group.  Your group will create, plan, direct, edit, and star in your own  5+ minute philosophy video.   This will be a collaborative effort to demonstrate an aspect or point of view of philosophy.  Your video might be a rehearsed drama, an allegory, a moment in the life of a philosopher, an epiphany for a student, a Socratic dialogue, or any other philosophically based idea that is not boring

The format of the film and all creative and artistic decisions are up to you and should reflect your interests and creative judgment (keeping in mind school system regulations regarding taste, appropriate content, etc. See me if you have questions.).
Down side-Anyone can do a bad video.

The Utopian Vision
Your group will develop a utopian society and make a presentation to the class.  This also gives wide latitude for creativity but has two difficulties.  First, the members of the group must more or less agree on what they are doing. Second, there a great many details to be considered and justified.  You will probably not finish but can at least give it a good start.  You may have read utopian based novels and should have a sense of what is involved.  Components of your utopia must be compelling, justified, reasonable, and not rely to greatly on fictional scientific breakthroughs.
Down side- Groups will sometimes crash and burn or become silly.  This should be a serious effort

The most important part of this project is presentation to and interaction with the class.Your group must:
 * provide appropriate visual charts, graphs, organizers, etc. to clearly explain your plan.
 * have handouts when necessary.
 * be clear, well organized, and well prepared.
 * answer questions from the class.
 * have sufficient details to show that you have thought this through.
Plans that are too general will be booed.

Whatever You Think of and Philosophy
Any other ideas must be described in detail and approved well in advance.  The amount of effort involved should be equivalent to that in the other options mentioned above.  Requirements will be determined on a case by case basis.
