Design a Product
The last step in the whole disability project is to design a product that can aid a disabled person (without the use of an arm). Mr. Leaf's students were given basic guidelines for the project, and then allowed to make any product they wanted. The instructions included:
- Design a product to solve a real problem
- Draw the solution using complete dimensions
- Calculate forces required
- Build a model (it works, but doesn't have to look like the product would in production) or a mock-up (doesn't work, but looks like the product would)
- Give a five minute presentation extolling the virtues of your product
The groups (four students per group) then brainstormed problems and solutions. They drew drawings, and then built models. One group created a new computer keyboard with different key placement, while another group made a toothbrush that has a built-in toothpaste dispenser. All the groups then presented their products, and ended the project with a new view on the lives of the disabled.
