Experience a Disability

In order for his students to understand what living with a disability is like, Mr. Leaf had them "experience" a disability: they had to wear a sling on their weak arm for a week. The sling had to be worn for every activity (except for gym, band, or other activities that the assignment would lower the students' ability to participate) for the week, including eating, showering, doing homework, and more. The students kept a log about what activities were hindered the most by their "disability." After the week was over, they reported to the class, and brainstormed possible devices that could be made that would aid people with the disability that the students had experienced. The next step in the project was to actually design and build the devices.
