Leaflet Engineering Technology Utilization Systems, Unc. has been approached by the American Helicopter Society (AHS) to bid on modification of the design of their teaching helicopter. Teachers and students have found other sources for learning about flight. To further their goal of interesting students to pursue careers in engineering and rotor flight, it is believed that the hands-on product must be simple and exciting. To achieve this goal, the AHS has undertaken the project of improving their teaching helicopter. Specifically, the new design must be:

  • easy to build - middle school student target audience
  • minimum tool usage
  • easily acquired and inexpensive materials
  • high performance to arouse interest.
  • Project deliverables:

  • Drawing of the new design
  • Fabrication instructions
  • Completed Helicopter Performance Data sheet
  • Sales presentation to AHS representatives describing the improvements made.
  • Presentations will be due the last block day before Semester exams begin unless notified otherwise. Management requires an initial Gantt chart before proceeding. Also, team leaders will give brief, oral status reports each Monday to management describing progress with respect to Gantt chart milestones.

    In addition, each team will maintain a file showing all in-progress operations as designated on the Problem-Solving Process sheet. Salary considerations for the pay period will include thoroughness in following the process and thoroughness in maintaining records.

    Final judging criteria include:

  • Time Aloft improvement
  • Simplification of the design
  • Improvement of ease of fabrication
  • Creativity and quality of presentation.
