Overview of Station
- We will explain the various cell parts and their function after we ask the students about what they already know.
- We will have a foam-core board on which we will place the cell parts as we explain them.
- We will then give the students construction paper organelles, with which they will construct their own model cells.
- Evaluation: We will hand out a crossword puzzle and a word search to the students. The word search will help the students learn the names of the organelles and the crossword puzzle will assure us that they understand the functions and interactions of the organelles.
Materials
- Foam-core board
- Assorted construction paper
- 8 glue sticks
- push pins
- scissors
- markers
- pens
- 9 manila envelope
- copies of the worksheets (word search)
Procedure
- Introduce the group. (20 seconds)
- Ask: "In your unit on cells that you did earlier this year, which cell parts did you learn about? Do you know the functions of those parts?" Let the students answer. (1-2 minutes)
- Tell students that we are going to be constructing model cells and learning about the parts (20 seconds)
- Pass out cell membranes, put it on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out cytosol, put it on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out nuclei, put it on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out mitochondria, put it on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out ER (endoplasmic reticulum), put it on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out ribosomes, put it on board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out vesticles, put on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out Golgi Apparatus, put it on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Pass out lysosomes, put it on the board, and explain its function. (1 minute)
- Quick review, have each student pick a part of the cell and explain its function, then pass out word search that they can do on their own. (5-7 minutes)
Resources
- Balkwill, Dr. F. (1993). Cells are us. London: William Collins and Sons. This book explains the functions of cells in the human body. Because the book is written for younger children it gives us an understanding of what a child that age would be interested in. This book is being used to find amazing facts concerning cells and their components.
- Biological Science - A Molecular Approach. (7th edition). Lexington: D.C. Health and Company. This book is a ninth grade biology book that explains everything form the biosphere to atoms. It is valuable to our research because it contains many chapters on cells that give us all the information we need to know. We mainly used chapter 6, which first introduces cells in the book.
- Cells, Genes, and Chromosomes. (1995). New York: Chelsea House Publishers. This book discusses the structure and activities of cells, their growth and differentiation, and the various functions of tissue. This book of helpful because it was written for younger children and explains everything clearly and simply. This book provides amazing facts concerning cells and their components.
