Overview of Station

  1. We will teach the students about the car engine
  2. We will play Mochine Tag with them
  3. Evaluation: As long as they know how to play Mochine Tag and also complete the worksheets properly, we will be satisfied with what we have taught them.

Materials

  • Index cards
  • Overhead
  • Transparencies

Procedure

  1. Introduction of our names, what our group is about, and the two catagories that we'll be talking about. Warn about Mochine Tag. (2 minutes)
  2. Power- display overhead and teach the different parts of the cylinder and piston. Discuss the air/gas mixture. Explain four strokes of the internal combustion cycle. (5 minutes)
  3. Exhaust- link to the power cycle. Discuss egress from the cylinder. Describe exhaust path through muffler. Describe purpose of muffler. Describe the effects of carbon monoxide on the atmosphere and animals (including humans). (3 minutes)
  4. Go outside and play Mochine Tag. (6 minutes)
  5. Question and Answer Session (4 minutes)
  6. Hand out the Follow Up Activities

  • A. Page, Martyn., Ed., Eyewitness Visual Dictionary of Cars. New York, NY: Dorling Kindersley, 1992. This book was very useful because of its many labeled pictures. It is easy for kids to use and has a good amount of information.
