Directions for Building Teeterboards

  1. Obtain all materials on the parts list.
  2. Put the three by two-foot sheet of heavy duty cardboard on a sturdy surface.
  3. Take nine cotton balls, and form them into a three by three-inch square. Wrap the napkin around them. Use tape to secure the napkin over the squares. This is your landing pad. (See figure 3.1 All illustrations are on attached pages.)
  4. Set the landing pad down so that its closest edge is three inches from the edge of the two foot side of the cardboard and ten and one half inches from either of the long sides. (This measurement may very depending on the size of the cotton balls. Try to center it.) Use glue to attach to this spot.
  5. (The next three steps may be difficult so try as many times as materials permit or you feel it necessary.) Cut two two by two-inch blocks of Styrofoam that are each one-inch thick. (See figure 5.1)
  6. Glue the two blocks together so that you end up with one two inch cube and let the glue dry before moving on to step 7.
  7. Chose an edge of the block. It does not matter which one since they are all the same lengths. Measure one inch in from either end and mark it to find the center. Then do the same to the edge that is parallel to the one that you just marked. Draw a line that connects the two marks. Set the cube so that the face with the line is up. Now cut from this line out to the bottom corner on each side to form an isosceles triangle using a saw or other available cutting implement. (See figure 7.1)
  8. Take a sheet of construction paper and cut it so it matches figure 8.1. Wrap this around this triangle and glue it on. Cut off excess paper.
  9. Measure one inch in from the edge on the two inch square face of the triangle and using a saw or other available method cut an eighth of one inch wide and deep notch in the Styrofoam so that it cuts across the side (See figure 9.1)
  10. Set the foam triangle on the table so that the two-inch square face is touching the table.
  11. Cut a notch large enough to fit the rubber band into in the wood block that runs across the nine by one and one half inch face, this cut should be parallel to the short side and in the center of the block. Then cut one in the other nine by one and one half inch face that is the same size. (For directions 11and 12 See figures 11.1-11.3) Set the wood block on top of the triangle so that the topside of the triangle is directly under the wood block and so that the top of the triangle fits into the notch in the block. (The notches should be altered if necessary.)
  12. Wrap the rubber band around the triangle and wood block so that it crosses the center, fits in the notch on both the triangle and wood block and holds the two together.
  13. Determine the center of the of the cardboard base by measuring one foot feet from the distance between the three foot edges and one and one half from the distance between the two foot edges. Place this assembled teeterboard in the center of the sheet of cardboard and glue it down.
  14. Measure and cut six inches of the tape. Make it into a loop by sticking the ends together so that the sticky side is facing out.
  15. Fill the can halfway with sand. Stick the tape to the top of the can. (The side with the tab is the top.)
  16. Cut a three-inch square of cardboard from the cardboard scraps.
  17. Using the tape on the can, attach the cardboard to the top of the can. (If necessary, remove the tab.)
  18. Set the can (cardboard facing up) in a straight line with the landing pad and the teeter board three inches from the edge that is farthest from the landinge two tongue depressors. Cut one in half with scissors. Set the half tongue depressor on top of the whole one, perpendicular to it, to form a cross. (See figure 19.1) Glue them together and use an eye hook through the glued sections of both sticks to secure the two of them together. This is one of your performers. Repeat step 19 twice, so you have three performers. (If you have the time, you can draw faces on them.) Cut the chopstick in half. Take one of the performers and attach the half chopstick to the feet of the performer by placing the two together and wrapping tape around them.(See figure 19.2)
  19. Cut two 18-inch lengths of wire and one 24-inch length of wire.
  20. Tape down one end of each of the 24 inch wires between the can and the edge of the cardboard, one and one half inches from the edge and four inches apart.(See figure 21.1)
  21. Take the two performers without chopsticks. Run one wire through the eye hook on each of performers.
  22. Find the half of the teeterboard that is closest to the can. To the sides of this, tape the end of each wire to the cardboard one inch to the side of the teeterboard. The wires should not cross. (See figure 21.1)
  23. Take the last wire and tape it to the cardboard between the edge and the landing pad, one and one half inches from the edge.
  24. Run the wire through the hook on the last performer.
  25. Tape the other end of this wire to the cardboard one inch from the side of the teeterboard just as you did in direction 23.
  26. If you have extra time, feel free decorate the display as you wish using markers, paint or whatever is available.
