Being able to easily and quickly calibrate a camera, or an electronic distance-measuring device such as I used over the summer to measure locations of buildings (to within millimeters if we were lucky), is useful for any task that involves digital imaging devices; obviously, the easier it is to set up such a device, the more time the user has left to actually use it in the interests of science.
