Pd. 3 September 26, 2005 Computer Systems Project Proposal I. Model of Wealth Distribution, Banking, and Consumer Demand II. Looking at the interactions of banks, corporations, and consumers III. This project is an economic extension of the bank system NetLogo model. The results will hopefully simulate a controlled-economy and reveal the wealth generation and distribution in a free market economy. IV. The controlled economy consists of three competing corporations, a stock market for these three corporations, a bank that will invest in these corporations and make loans to consumers, and consumers who will interact with the remaining components. V.Economics as a field relies on models in order to determine consumer preferences, optimize demand due to supply, and make reports on wealth distribution, etc. My model is a combination of the said three components in a controlled society, which simulates both microeconomic components such as consumer preferences and macroeconomic components such as a mini stock market. So far, I've been looking at http://www.bized.ac.uk/virtual/home.htm, which has various economic simulations along with detailed descriptions into economic theory. VI. I've already started learning the NetLogo scripting language, and have already commented on the base banking model. I intend to have the three competing corporations with some arbitrary product implemented within two weeks (October 14). From there, I can start programming a stock market, product enhancements and innovations, and interest on bank loans, which is currently not implemented in the model. The actual model will be programmed with the NetLogo scripting language, but LaTeX will be used to generate my paper and analysis. These data will be compared with economic theory and various models that I have yet to research, but I hope to find results that contradict the theory. In any case, my end goal is to get my model posted on the NetLogo website. VII. I should be able to have a running simulation by January. All that I will need to present in terms of graphs are almost already set - I just need to factor in the stock market and corporation wealth generation as well as the interest. These tasks should easily be completed with only minor alteration of the existing code. As an economic model, my project should reveal the a controlled economy and hopefully will prove that competition drives prices down and that interest and investment generates wealth. While this is anticipated in the current free market economic theories, there exists no easy-to-obtain models that simulates such a comprehensive society.
