Jordan Hurley Period 2 I. A simulation of the formation of Traffic Jams on Highways II. The problem is to create a simulation of highway driving and traffic jams for more effective prediction. III. The goal of this project is to simulate how drivers behave on highways, such as slowing or changing lanes when they see a car in front of them, and speeding up when there is open road in front of them. Eventually, I might try to have 2 highways at once and the relations when I have traffic jams on one to the other. IV. The most difficult part of this project would be including more than one highway and interrelating them using exits and the likes. Other than that, I don't know how long it will take me to learn how to use NetLogo and create a model with it. V. Background and review of current literature/research in this area. There has already been a moderate amount of research in this area, and there have been a couple of models included in the NetLogo library that deal with traffic. Last year, one of the seniors did a project on traffic dealing with intersections, and another senior did a preject researching optimal traffic light algorithms. VI. Procedure and Methodology. The first step in the plan is to learn how to work with NetLogo. After that, I will implement a ond-lane highway, and then build up to more lanes and then multiple highways. VII. Expected Results & Value to Others Perhaps this project will be useful to news stations with their traffic updates, allowing them to predict for their listeners when the traffic jams will clear up. It could also help infrastructure planners to predict problems with their highways and perhaps build a better highway.
