Introduction

A presentation by Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) for the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology (NCSSSMST) 2003 Conference in Roanoke Virginia.

What we hope to accomplish in this session:

  • generate discussion about uses of Open Source in education
  • discuss moving from research project to production resource
  • generate interest in collaborative projects
  • show the educational benefits for students.

What we don't mean to do:

  • show how to set up a Linux Lab
  • survey and evaluate Linux software
  • review specific software and demo how to use it
  • get carried away with our enthusiasm of our students' accomplishments
  • present our way of doing things as THE solution
  • pretend to be the experts (we depend on our students!).
